Processing Timelines for India eVisas: Tourist, Business & Medical

India eVisa processing is online and may continue outside normal consulate counter hours, but approval is still not guaranteed by a specific deadline. Weekends, holidays, system issues, document errors, and manual review can still affect timing, so U.S. travelers should apply early instead of waiting until the last few days.

eVisa TypeTypical TimelineBest ForTiming Notes
e-Tourist Visa3–5 business daysTourism, weddings, short family visits1-year multiple entry; approval is not guaranteed by a set date.
e-Business Visa3–5 business daysMeetings, conferences, trade showsSome profiles trigger manual review, which adds time.
e-Medical Visa3–5 business daysTreatment at a recognized hospitalKeep hospital documents ready to avoid queries.
  • Apply at least one week before travel for simple eVisa cases.
  • Apply earlier if your passport, photo, travel purpose, or prior visa history could trigger review.
  • Do not book non-refundable travel based only on an estimated approval window.

Processing Timelines for Regular & Paper Visas via VFS Global

For regular or paper visa applications, the total turnaround time is more than just consular processing. VFS intake, document review, appointment availability, mailing to the consulate, consular review, and return courier time can all add days.

Regular Visa TypeTypical Timeline from USAWhy It May Take LongerPlanning Buffer
Regular Tourist Visa5–10 business daysVFS intake + consular review + return courier~2 weeks
Regular Business Visa5–10 business daysInvitation and company documents may be verified~2 weeks
Entry Visa (X)2–3 weeksIndian-origin and family documents reviewed~3 weeks or more
Student Visa2–4 weeksAdmission and supporting documents reviewed~3–4 weeks
Employment Visa3–6 weeksContract and eligibility checks~4–6 weeks
OCI Card (for comparison)8–12 weeksTwo-stage consulate + MHA clearanceMonths — not for urgent travel

Courier time counts too. FedEx/UPS or other courier shipping time is counted on top of consular processing days. If your package is delayed, returned for correction, or held because of missing documents, the total timeline can extend by several business days or more.

  • Regular tourist/business visa: plan about 2 weeks where possible.
  • Entry Visa: plan about 3 weeks or more where possible.
  • OCI: plan months, not days, and do not treat it as an emergency travel solution.

Mistakes That Add Days or Weeks to Your India Visa Timeline

Passport expiring too soon

If your passport is close to expiry or does not have enough blank pages, VFS or the visa system may stop the application before it reaches review. Renewing the passport first can add weeks, so check validity before starting the visa application.

Name mismatch

A single spelling difference between your passport, application form, old Indian documents, marriage certificate, or supporting documents can trigger rejection or a resubmission request. That can add 5–10 business days or more while you correct forms, reprint documents, or mail a new packet.

Wrong visa type

Choosing eVisa when your case needs a regular visa, or choosing tourist visa for a business or family-origin case, can restart the timeline. A wrong category may cost you the original wait time plus a second application.

Applying too late

Even a simple eVisa can take longer if there is a holiday, system delay, or manual review. Regular visa and Entry Visa cases should not be started in the final week before travel unless it is a genuine emergency.

Old Indian passport / surrender questions

Former Indian citizens may need to answer surrender or renunciation questions before a visa or OCI application moves forward. Missing old passport or surrender details can add extra back-and-forth with VFS or the consulate.

Photo or document format errors

Wrong photo size, blurry passport scans, cropped images, or incomplete PDFs can pause the application before review. For mailed applications, a document issue may mean waiting for VFS to return the packet and then mailing a corrected version.

Minor child applications

Minor applications often require parent passports, birth certificate, signatures, consent forms, or proof of relationship. Missing one parent's document can delay the application until the file is complete.

Holiday and consulate workload

Indian and U.S. holidays, local consulate workload, and VFS appointment availability can stretch timelines. Add a buffer around major travel seasons, summer travel, winter holidays, and wedding season.

When to Apply Before Travel

Trip SituationSuggested Application Buffer
Simple eVisa tripAt least 1 week before travel
Regular tourist / business visaAbout 2–3 weeks before travel
Entry Visa / Indian-origin family caseAbout 3–4 weeks before travel
Minor child application3–4 weeks or more
Name mismatch / passport renewal / old Indian passport issueStart as early as possible
OCI8–12 weeks or more; not for urgent travel

These are planning buffers, not official guarantees.

Emergency or Urgent Travel

Genuine emergencies (serious family illness or bereavement) may be reviewed case by case by the relevant Indian Consulate or VFS process, but approval and timing are not guaranteed. Contact the consulate or VFS directly and keep proof of the emergency ready. Do not rely on OCI for urgent travel — it takes about 8–12 weeks.

Where to apply for your India visa

When you're ready, apply and check status on the official portals — the eVisa portal for eVisas, VFS Global for regular visas & OCI:

Frequently asked questions

How long does an India visa take from USA?

The eVisa takes about 3–5 business days, a regular tourist/business visa about 5–10 business days, an Entry Visa about 2–3 weeks, and OCI about 8–12 weeks. These are planning estimates, not guarantees.

How long does the India eVisa take to process?

India eVisa processing is often estimated around 3–5 business days, but it can take longer if the application needs manual review or documents are unclear. Apply at least a week before travel when possible.

How long does a regular India visa take through VFS?

About 5–10 business days once VFS intake, appointment availability, consular review, and return courier are counted. Plan roughly two weeks to be safe, and longer around holidays.

How long does an India Entry Visa take?

About 2–3 weeks, since Indian-origin and family documents need extra review. Apply early and keep your documentation complete and consistent.

Does VFS add to the processing time?

Yes. For regular and paper visas, VFS intake, appointment availability, mailing to the consulate, and return courier all add days on top of the raw consular review time.

Does courier shipping count in India visa processing time?

Yes. FedEx/UPS or other courier time to and from VFS is counted on top of consular processing. A package that is delayed, returned for correction, or held for missing documents can add several business days or more.

Why do India visa applications get delayed?

Incomplete or inconsistent documents, name mismatches, passport-validity issues, old-Indian-passport/surrender questions, minor-child cases, consulate workload, and holidays.

How early should I apply before traveling to India?

Allow about 1 week for a simple eVisa, 2–3 weeks for a regular visa, 3–4 weeks for an Entry Visa or minor-child case, and 8–12 weeks or more for OCI. Don't start in the final week before travel.

Can I expedite an urgent India visa?

Genuine emergencies may be reviewed case by case by the relevant Indian Consulate or VFS process, but approval and timing are not guaranteed. Contact the consulate or VFS directly and keep proof of emergency ready.

How do I check my India visa status?

Use the eVisa portal status check for eVisas, or VFS tracking for regular visas and OCI. Follow up if you're past about 5 business days (eVisa) or 10 business days (regular).

Is OCI faster than an India visa?

No. OCI takes about 8–12 weeks because of its two-stage clearance, far longer than a visa. If you need to travel soon, use a visa — an eVisa is often 3–5 business days — and pursue OCI separately.
