Which states file under Chicago
The Consulate General of India, Chicago holds passport jurisdiction for a large block of Midwestern states — generally Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Jurisdiction follows the state on your US address, not the consulate you happen to live nearest. Someone who moved from Indiana to Pennsylvania last year now files through New York even though Chicago is a shorter drive. A wrong-jurisdiction application is caught after you have paid, not before, so check the current list on the VFS USA site first.
When Midwest slots are tight
Chicago demand peaks twice: November through February, around winter travel and weddings in India, and again June through August. Outside those windows three to six weeks of lead time is usually enough. Inside them, start looking earlier — and check first thing in the morning, when cancelled slots are released back into the pool.
Indian-spec photos in Chicago
